The
reason for the last paragraph about leisure in Catullus’ poem 51 is Catullus’ apparent
adherence to ancient Roman cultural values. Though poetry about frivolous
experiences and cares became popular during the Late Republic, Catullus’
addition of his negative view of leisure at the end of the poem points to the Roman
ideals of hard work and persistence. While the Romans admired the Greeks’
literary accomplishments, the prejudiced Romans did not desire to completely
emulate the Greeks. Hence, Catullus’ poem differs from Sappho’s poem.
