A podcast of the BBC show "In Our Time" with Melvyn Bragg.  This episode features classicists Mary Beard, Denis Feeney, and Duncan Kennedy, on the topic "Roman Satire". Lots of information about the origins and preoccupations of the genre of satire, and about  Horace's predecessors Ennius and Lucilius, and the strange relationship between Satire and its more respectable hexametric twin, Epic.  If you stick with it, you'll hear a good discussion of Horace's Satire 1.9.

  1. One of my favorites from this was Feeney reminding us that "poets create their own predecessors," and I was thinking about this while reviewing for today's test. E.g. while reviewing 1.13, I was remembering Beard's summary of Ennius' reported bodily function, or disfunction. And while reviewing 1.5, I recalled Kennedy's summary of Lucilius portraying himself as a guy who really likes sex and food. This was a great podcast to listen to, and very useful not only for studying satire but also as we move forward in Horace's Odes too, I think. Thanks for sharing this!
